Automated assessment for online courses and certificate programs

For online courses, self-paced modules, and certificate programs, waiting for an instructor to grade is a bottleneck that does not need to exist. Automated Assessment delivers rubric-aligned feedback and grades to students the moment a submission is processed, at any volume, at any hour.

Why
it
matters

01
Feedback the moment you submit, not days later
In self-paced and online programs, delayed feedback breaks the learning loop. Automated Assessment returns rubric-aligned feedback immediately after a submission is processed, while the work is still fresh and there is still time to apply the lesson to the next module.
Student experience improvement
02
Run high-enrollment courses without scaling the grading team
A certificate program with 500 active learners in different time zones cannot run on manual grading alone. Automated Assessment handles every submission as it arrives, regardless of volume or hour. Course coordinators configure the criteria once and the AI grades consistently to that standard across every cohort.
Scaling operations
03
Extend formative assessment to programs where it was not feasible before
Many online and certificate programs rely on quizzes because open-ended assessment at scale requires instructors who are not available. Automated Assessment makes rubric-aligned feedback on written, applied, and video submissions viable at any enrollment size.
Retention improvement

How to do automated assessment with AI

01
Enable Automated Assessment and set the grading criteria
In the LearnWise dashboard under the AI Feedback tab, toggle on Automated Assessment. Enable general feedback, rubric-level feedback generation, and grade suggestions. Add custom instructions and upload a CSV of assignment IDs to specify exactly which assignments receive automated grading.
02
Student submits through the LMS as normal
Students submit through the LMS exactly as they would for any other assignment. Text submissions, file uploads, and video recordings are all supported. No separate interface or process is required.
03
AI grades and generates feedback without teacher input
As soon as the submission is processed, AI Feedback & Grader evaluates it against the rubric and custom instructions. It generates overall feedback, criterion-by-criterion commentary, and a suggested grade for each rubric row. When Use Knowledge and course content is enabled, it references relevant course materials in the feedback.
04
Feedback and grade are returned to the student automatically
The student sees their feedback and grade in the LMS, including the breakdown by rubric criterion. No instructor action is required. Course coordinators can review automated feedback records in the dashboard and flag individual submissions for instructor review at any point.

How it works

Automated Assessment is configured once in the LearnWise dashboard. Admins enable the capabilities they need, general feedback, rubric-level scoring, and grade suggestions, and set custom instructions that define the tone and focus. A CSV upload of assignment IDs specifies exactly which assignments trigger automatic grading.

When a submission arrives on a configured assignment, the AI evaluates it against the rubric and generates feedback before any instructor opens the queue. Overall feedback, per-criterion scores, and suggested grades are returned to the student in the LMS without teacher input. If Use Knowledge and course content is enabled, the AI adds context in feedback from those.

Course coordinators retain full visibility. All automated feedback records are accessible in the dashboard for review, and individual submissions can be flagged for instructor follow-up at any point. Automated grading handles the volume; human oversight handles the exceptions.

Key features

  • Overall feedback on the submission generated automatically on receipt
  • Rubric-level feedback and suggested grade for each criterion
  • Course content referenced when relevant to enrich the feedback
  • Text, file, and video submissions all processed in the same workflow
  • Assignment-level control via CSV so automated grading applies only where configured
  • All automated records visible in the dashboard for coordinator review
  • Individual submissions flaggable for instructor follow-up at any time

Automated by design. Auditable at every step.

Automated Assessment is an opt-in setting, enabled per assistant and applied only to the specific assignments listed in the configuration. All automated feedback records are stored and accessible to coordinators and admins.
